Shorebird
Colored pencil, white charcoal on toned board
9" x 16"

A wary little willet stands quietly on the sandy shore on a misty grey day. Twiggy branches make a tangled sculpture with the gnarled branches picking up glints of light, and leading the eye to the bird. The background color was achieved by rubbing several layers of pastels in shades of dusty blue, mocha and cool grey into the board, and then applying fixative. The monotone color scheme adds a feeling of tranquility to this solitary creature in his native shoreline habitat.
