Ponies on the run
Oil on Birch Panel
24" x 48"

Years ago, I found a great old frame at a garage sale on Cape Cod. Its massive size completely intimidated me, so it stayed in the closet. Gradually I began painting larger canvases, and then my friend Don sent me a fabulous photo of the Chincoteague ponies dashing through a grassy field. The proportion was right, and I set to work. The landscape colors are subdued, but the ponies are bright to make them stand out. I particularly like the way the pattern of white patches on their coats enhances the feeling of motion and makes my eyes dance across the painting. Foreground grasses were done with palette knives and many soft glazes.
