Landscape Portraits by Polly McGrory

Maine light. Mediterannean light. North light.
Artists are drawn to a place because of its light.
The unique quality of light inspires painters, writers,
and photographers. The places in New England are
legendary ... the chill rays of a winter sunrise in
New Hampshire casting tiny jewels across a cornfield.
The rich golden light bathing sand and sea on
Cape Cod. The sharp white sunshine silhouetting
a fishing village in Maine. The tawny, rusty, scarlet
hues of an Autumn afternoon in Vermont with the
sun filtering through the wildly colored foliage.
The magic that drew Edward Hopper, Henry Thoreau,
Henry Beston, Sam Barber, Joel Meyerowitz,
the American Luminists, the Impressionists ...
and countless others to its golden aura.

MAIN STREET DOOR

WATERCOLOR
9" x 12" FRAMED
TRPLE MATTED, HAND-PAINTED FRAME

One of a series of paintings of doors along Main Street in Thomaston, Maine. The entire street is flanked on both sides with historic gems of every architectural style and color imaginable. Many of rhe facades are embellished with Victorian touches or grand colonial entrances. The reference photographs were taken on a brilliant autumn morning in October when the fall colors were at their peak.

THOMASTON TRUE COLORS

WATERCOLOR
9" x12" FRAMED
TRPLE MATTED, HAND-PAINTED FRAME

A small cottage sits between the elegant Victorians and Federal Colonial homes along Main Street in Thomaston. The incredible colors in the October foliage are a challenge to paint accurately. Here, the brilliant warm reds of a maple in its autumn regalia are contrasted with the cool green of the cottage’s clapboards. The sun in Maine is especially dazzling at this time of year, due to Maine’s northern location.

Oil Painting of Monet in his garden in his own style
MONET A LA MONET
OIL 18" x 24"
ORNATE GOLD LEAF CARVED FRAME

An ancient hand-colored postcard was the
inspiration for this painting, which shows
Monet in his beloved garden in France.
The tongue-in-cheek title refers to
the way the paint was applied —
in Impressionist-style strokes and daubs,
similar to the way Monet painted.

Watercolor and Casein painting of Chatham

ON THE WAY TO THE LIGHT

CASEIN and WATERCOLOR
27" x 40"
BLACK WOOD FRAME

This view of the winding road that leads to Chatham Light is a dramatic study in the phenomenon of "Cape light." The dazzling morning sun illuminating the white facades is captured by leaving the brilliant white of the paper and painting the sahdows around it. Liberal use of casein gives the painting a great richness of color.
