Chloe Watercolor, pastel, casein
17" x 24"

My friend Stanley, a great chum of mine from my horseback riding days, called me a few weeks before Christmas. She and all her fellow boarders at the riding stable wanted a perfect gift for Erika, the Stable Manager. They all agreed that a portrait of Chloe, Erika’s aging Irish Setter, was a splendid idea. Chloe was a fixture at the barn, always by the side of Lucy, her canine pal. “The sweetest dogs you ever saw,” Stanley wrote me. I could see that in Chloe’s elegant bearing and her soft expression. There were many tears when Erika received the portrait, as everyone knew Chloe’s days were numbered. I truly felt a close contact with this beautiful dog. It is one of my favorite portraits.
