Butternut and Brass
Pastel on Rust Canson paper
18½" x 24"

This painting has been exhibited frequently, and the reaction is always an incredulous "That is PASTEL??" Indeed it is. The rust-colored paper acts like an underpainting, and unifies the composition which is full of circles and bright reflections. I was intrigued by an old photo of a boat’s interior that had been lovingly rebuilt in butternut. The warm colors were so striking, and the gleaming brass picked up reflections in the bright sunlight.
